New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down by [ profile] jeannedecarnin. Inception, Arthur/Eames. Lonely Christmas pr0n set in New York.

I really have to do something with all my memories of being lonely in famous cities. Like the time I stormed out of the dorm at 1.30am to march down Bedford Place and Great Russell Street all the way down Oxford Street almost to Marble Arch before I ran out of steam. Or hearing the bells of Venice all ring at midnight. Everyone has moments like this--why can't I turn them into decent fanfic or comics like a normal person?

I am having the most clichéd New York experience ever. Third of five days, midnight, laptop on my belly, in my uncle's loft flat one block away from Broadway. It's raining really hard, wind and all smacking against the window and skylight. Every now and then sirens go screaming or moaning by.

It's so great; wish I had more time here. Best Christmas present I can think of.

Sorry about the radio silence recently; I was busy, then away--and then my Internet went down!

There are a lot of people on here who were on the East Coast; I hope the storm left you all safe and dry. Mom and my aunt live up there; my aunt was in a particularly dangerous area and too stubborn to move, but nothing happened and now she says it was no big deal. Sigh.

Things I have been doing recently:

  • Getting over a terrible sunburn
  • Ticking off my bucket list--white water rafting! Another place in this country that I've visited! And the fish foot spa! That was really interesting; it's like being attended by a hundred tiny self-animated emery boards. It's very ticklish at first, but then you get used to it and space out watching all the little fish nibble your toes. :)
  • Doing lots of small watercolours. I got a Prang and a Golden set, as I am a lazy person who doesn't want to bother with tube colours, and ever since my mom sent me Blue Heron waterbrushes, it's been absurdly easy to paint with the trays. My friend Xabi gave me an amazing set of Pelikan colours she's had since she was a kid, and they're still great! You can see the results on my art journal.
  • Trying to get the Internet back!

Have also been worrying about money a bit as I have barely enough to get me through to the coming payday on Thursday. But no worries! Have an illustration!

Wow, I've been away so long LJ got a new look while I was gone...

Have been faffing around on Tumblr and the SRS ARTZ blog when I am online, but I've mostly not been online. Had 2 holidays in a row and got into a scheduling snafu with the second one, which set me back at work while also putting me in disgrace with my normally very sweet new boss from Basingstoke.

Other things that have happened: we all thought my cousin had a medical problem so she came home from the find out she was pregnant. WOOHOO! Also I got to spend time with my baby nephew, who is amazing. ♥ ♥ ♥ I'm not normally so heteronormative, but I do really love this kid.

And the Unscrupulous Workplace has introduced biometric logins, which means you log in with.........your FINGERPRINT. As a true-blue SF fan I should be excited about this Bond-like development, but as, well, a true-blue SF fan, visions of Orwell and Doctorow dystopias dance in my head at the idea. I haven't yet handed in (as it were) my prints, which I foresee will get me in MORE trouble, but I just find it so Brazil. Gah.

In other news, tarsiers are really tiny, as are baby ocelots, and the Brahminy kite, or sea-eagle, is my new second-favourite bird. Squee!

It's nearly 5.30am and I am only beginning to be sleepy. Today I woke up at 4pm. This is the most dramatically jetlagged I have been for years. The past few trips I didn't even need a day to catch up, so it was a shock.

So here is something productive to do with my time...
Things from the trip )
I think that's it. It's definitely past sunrise, though not full day yet. I really must try to sleep.

Here is the trip-to-Wales blog, only it would be tedious to read as I really didn't do much while I was there; or rather, I did lots of the same few things. So you're having the story in pictures instead.

Uploaded the rest of my Pompeii gallery. Only now do I realise--did I not take pictures of the Faun??? *beats head against wall* Gods, the heat must have addled my brains. T_T Anyway, enjoy. Next, part 2 of the fan essay.

For [ profile] z107m, because she reminded me, and [ profile] petronia, who curates photos so much better than I do. ^_^

Pictures of Pompeii...

...part 1. Photoshop is acting up, so it'll be a while before I can edit and upload the rest. My favorites are the bath pictures, of course; I love those dust mote things that look like floating spirits.

I wish I were [ profile] petronia so I could make a soundtrack for this trip.
