I am teaching myself digital art, and it's frustrating.

Here's something they didn't have at my art school: tablets or a course on how to draw using tablets. In fact, I can count the number of classes focused on fundamentals of drawing on one hand. And I was taking Illustration.

I can use traditional materials well. They're comfortable to me. Not so the Wacom Bamboo and bewildering number of art brushes out there.

Have been doing some more digital work, stretching my legs in Photoshop and vector programs. You can see it on the art blog:

In related news, my MacBook Air has been incredibly slow lately. Is it the heat or the workload...?

So I've been writing a Little Mermaid retelling in which the mermaid is male, the Sea Witch is also male (and in love with him) and instead of being set in pseudo-medieval England, it's set in pseudo-medieval Moorish Spain.

Anyway, have some wistful angst and pretty boys in flowy robes. Pentel brush pen and Caran D'Ache aquarelle pencils.

agh stop it

So in between doing the Book Project this week, I have also been compiling my portfolio, which is pretty much guaranteed to fill me with horror and shame.

Note to self: DO NOT look at other illustration blogs while sorting out your portfolio. Here is a tiny sampling of people who usually make me happy but today just made me depressed:

On the bright side, these people really are awesome, so go check them out!

I used to collect rubber stamping and scrapbooking manuals like a good little addict. Somerset Studios, Visual Chronicles, Rubber Stamp Journal...I loved them. But after a while these 'manuals' started to frustrate me.

I live in a small town, in a country with no Target or Michael's or giant craft store. Where I live you can't just dash out and pick up a hand press (a mythical item I've never even seen in real life), a bone folder, or a heating pad. There are no star-shaped punches or gilt frame stickers to be found, no Mod Podge, no ink pads in jewel colours, no....I'll stop now, before my blood pressure goes any higher.

Immersive theatre. What does that mean? All I knew going in was that it meant a lot of walking, mandatory coat check ('nothing hanging off your body', said the polite but insistent ushers) and an ID inspection at the entrance queue. The rest was a weird but thrilling surprise.

New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down by [livejournal.com profile] jeannedecarnin. Inception, Arthur/Eames. Lonely Christmas pr0n set in New York.

I really have to do something with all my memories of being lonely in famous cities. Like the time I stormed out of the dorm at 1.30am to march down Bedford Place and Great Russell Street all the way down Oxford Street almost to Marble Arch before I ran out of steam. Or hearing the bells of Venice all ring at midnight. Everyone has moments like this--why can't I turn them into decent fanfic or comics like a normal person?

So where the hell was I when the Inception fandom appeared last year? It's not like I didn't watch it at the same time as everyone else. I think I was so blown away by the story it didn't feel like there was anything more to look for. And honestly I totally missed the Arthur/Eames thing the first time round. (I know, I know, I might as well hand in my slash goggles.)

Anyway, playing around with the idea of levels in dreams as stage trapdoors as pointed out in this post. In the process learned that Photoshop Elements + lack of working tablet = fail.

I will keep trying, but so far it looks like this )

god damn it

So one viewing of a hitRECord video on youtube and it's like being smacked in the face with the midnight disease: you can't go to bed without making something.

perevision: (music)
Oh, Iceland. Why is your music so lovely?

It's not like I didn't love Björk already, even in her more experimental modes, but when my friend introduced me to Sigur Rós it was like a completely different world.

Then my illustration teacher got me into múm. While Sigur Rós is operatic and emotionally devastating in its delivery, listening to múm feels more like spending a drizzly winter morning snuggled under your duvet with someone you like very much, who's humming nonsense love songs into your hair. Comforting doesn't begin to describe it.

And now Jónsi's got his solo album, and it's so gorgeous I have to do a painting for each one of his songs. Here's one I did a few months back. I've been working on the third one for ages; I keep screwing it up.

Sorry about the radio silence recently; I was busy, then away--and then my Internet went down!

There are a lot of people on here who were on the East Coast; I hope the storm left you all safe and dry. Mom and my aunt live up there; my aunt was in a particularly dangerous area and too stubborn to move, but nothing happened and now she says it was no big deal. Sigh.

Things I have been doing recently:

  • Getting over a terrible sunburn
  • Ticking off my bucket list--white water rafting! Another place in this country that I've visited! And the fish foot spa! That was really interesting; it's like being attended by a hundred tiny self-animated emery boards. It's very ticklish at first, but then you get used to it and space out watching all the little fish nibble your toes. :)
  • Doing lots of small watercolours. I got a Prang and a Golden set, as I am a lazy person who doesn't want to bother with tube colours, and ever since my mom sent me Blue Heron waterbrushes, it's been absurdly easy to paint with the trays. My friend Xabi gave me an amazing set of Pelikan colours she's had since she was a kid, and they're still great! You can see the results on my art journal.
  • Trying to get the Internet back!

Have also been worrying about money a bit as I have barely enough to get me through to the coming payday on Thursday. But no worries! Have an illustration!

perevision: (falcon hood)
Catch As Catch Can is finally up on AO3 as I gave up illustrating it. Dedication and consistency, I do not know what these words mean. Sigh.

the tricky bit of making things: all of it )
perevision: (door open)
I don't know what it is.

I might have figured out why I always draw them closed: I find open doors creepy.

So it takes me a while to get started on something, but when I start...

Here are some studies I've been working on so I can get Sherlock art right. I got some really fantastic references from the other BBC (the Big BC fansite) and aithine.org's amazing Sherlock screencaps.

Then I brought out the blue pencil this morning and really got into it:

--why, WHY are you so hard to draw???

Is it:
A) your nose
B) your mouth
C) your eyes
D) your curls
or E) all of the above, plus you are simply unfathomable and also I get so distracted looking at you that I can't draw you?

Hmmmmmmm. Ah the questions, they answer themselves.

Looks like I need a lot of practice before I can get that look right. Thank goodness for Tumblr.

I seem to have reached the Order of the Phoenix stage of the fic. Not that I am JK Rowling by any means, but how else to describe the sudden dip in ease of writing (I was going to say quality, but I honestly cannot judge whether my fic is decent until a few months after I've written it) and the fact that I can see what happens AFTER this bit but not quite how to get there? As a result I am flailing around and just trying to get the bridge across to the good bits.

Humph.

I think I had my wangst out about this on dreamwidth last night, but now it is daytime and I am feeling a bit braver.

Still, have a picture, and some thoughts.

Also [livejournal.com profile] angelthorn linked to some beautiful videos that make me want to travel again, or at least write about it.
