I am teaching myself digital art, and it's frustrating.

Here's something they didn't have at my art school: tablets or a course on how to draw using tablets. In fact, I can count the number of classes focused on fundamentals of drawing on one hand. And I was taking Illustration.

I can use traditional materials well. They're comfortable to me. Not so the Wacom Bamboo and bewildering number of art brushes out there.

Never has this icon been so apropos.

I want to spare you my feelings being spewed all over Twitter; there are funnier, more insightful or original liveTweeters/bloggers out there writing about this (and I am going to read them right now! First stop: Janice Poon. Next stop: [personal profile] cleolinda's Storify.)

But if you want to know what I was yelling during the episode, by all means read on! )

In conclusion, Hannibal is as beautiful and batshit as ever and I am there for all of it 100%. Can't wait.

So I was really excited when I heard that the creator of my very favourite show was doing a show about my very favourite serial killer, and between a very close friend and the whole of Tumblr, I got the idea I really needed to watch Hannibal.

Hannibal is not a show for the squeamish, especially if you have a lot of empathy. I am finding it very hard to watch but somehow still delightful, and have developed several coping mechanisms. One is eating terrible food while watching (crispy corned beef? ice cream with barquillos? Chester's Puffcorn?). A more recent one is drawing.

brush pen sketches! )

Note: I've only seen up to episode 1 of season 2, so no spoilers in the comments please, although teasers are acceptable because if there's anything I learned from this show, it's that emotionally torturing your friends is fun.

Holy crap, what happened to LiveJournal? *skitters away to safe space*

Doing extensive research for two projects: one is based on The Little Mermaid, and one is a not-quite-sf story in which special abilities can be engineered, resulting in children called Gifted.

Research for the merboy story is mostly visual, except for some Spanish history, but the other one is a lot more demanding. More emotionally than mentally.

Rereading keelywolfe's epic Hobbit fanfic The Road Delivered Us Home, and was inspired to do watercolour fanart of Thorin peeling carrots in Bilbo's kitchen.

Characterisation may change. I am also thinking of dropping the framing device in chapter 1 and telling it straight-on, Stevenson style.
perevision: (bookgirl)
Sometimes you just have to write something even if it doesn't seem like anyone will read it. I'm a bit touchy about original characters in fanfiction, and yet it seems to me that I have begun something which is basically a space academy romance novel which just happens to feature Jim Hawkins as one of the leads. What I am actually trying to achieve is a Star Trek/Harry Potter Victorian naval AU written in the style of Robert Louis Stevenson. I reread Treasure Island and am reading Kidnapped! and Stevenson's Travels to get the flavour but as yet have only done about 3K.

and here it is )

Reluctant to post on AO3 as this desperately needs a beta, and I am not sure who I can even ask. Should I get rid of the framing device? Is it 'Stevenson' enough? Can I convince people to care about Leigh and his problems? Any help or advice would be appreciated.
perevision: Howl drawing a spell (howl draw)
I am a sucky fanfic writer. Once every few years I'll be bitten by a bunny and then there appear one or two new pages on AO3. But my ideas are always terrible unless provided by someone else.

Case in point:

Treasure Planet and Iron Man 3/Avengers...not at the same time obvs )

(and of course that pairing order is intentional.)

If you guys remember this post, I kind of helplessly ship Diana/Steve, otherwise known as Wonder Woman/Captain America. Other people seem to like this idea, so I am now doing a fan comic.

This year is the first time I will be 'stationed' in London over the holidays instead of going on holiday myself with family, so I'd like to celebrate my first holiday season in London with cards! I'm excited to send out a proper batch of holiday cards like a grown-up, as previous attempts didn't go so well orz

So: drop a comment (they will be screened) with your name, mailing address, the holiday you celebrate (Christmas, Chanukah, Winter Solstice &c) and a prompt (optional) and you will get a card from me. Um, I can't guarantee it'll arrive by December 25 though ^^;

Did I actually write a half-poem on books about the vagina? Er, yes, I did.

(The Vagina Monographs: an illustrated poem)

In less uncomfortable news, I have also been drawing things on the long, long bus ride to work. Because it is so long and I'm tired of telling myself I will do urban sketching when I have the time.

I wrote 1000 words last night on the interdimensional Mughal-era Benedictine nunnery YA novel. This is more words than I have written for it in literally years. I really need to work harder on these projects I supposedly really care about. I also began to sketch out a watercolour illustration which is going...about as well, considering I am terrible at lighting in illustration.

Besides that I actually have been writing stuff, mostly journaling and reviews, because when applying to be a copywriter it might help to have some writing with my real name on it that isn't for my awful former vanity-press employer. However the stuff I post on the semi-serious writing blog is taking an alarming turn for the personal. Maybe I'm too self-involved. Not sure that bodes too well for my origfic, or is that actually what origfic is supposed to achieve? Not self-involvement, obviously, but something personal that I don't really have to confront or get to play with when I'm writing fanfic.

Speaking of origfic, I may have forgotten to post the other watercolour illustration from the merboy story. See below. )

Have been doing some more digital work, stretching my legs in Photoshop and vector programs. You can see it on the art blog:

In related news, my MacBook Air has been incredibly slow lately. Is it the heat or the workload...?

In the end, it's just practice, isn't it? Like drawing. You can't say you're 'naturally' bad at it; what happens is you don't practice enough. Making friends is an art: it's fun and takes some work.

It takes practice to speak to people I've never met before, and even more practice to listen. It takes practice to remember to keep in touch, to reach out when I want to hear from them. But if I want to hear from them, to connect, then I want to practice--and it gets easier over time.

But just because you're not out there gladhanding all the time, doesn't mean you're antisocial. Sometimes you want to spend time connecting with yourself, too. This might be relevant:

So many of my favourite anime series revolve around the twin concepts of 'loneliness' and 'friendship'. More precisely, almost every anime I've seen from the simplistic to the weirdly convoluted hinge on the idea of 'connection'. Sometimes it's more 'you are like me', but often it's also 'I did not expect to find this common ground with someone so apparently different from me'.

Lately I found myself between projects (trying not to translate this in my head as 'unemployable'), so I finished the Natsume Yuujinchou anime and the Nodame Cantabile manga. They are surprisingly similar. Beings with talent, finding each other. Growing a connection between them, and working to strengthen it.

Sometimes anime has a funny way of externalising these inner concepts. How lonely do you have to be to make friends with spirits? Or defeat someone (often brutally) in battle, before they can become your friend or lover?

I can't say making friends in the 'real world' feels the same as trying to get along with a giant tikbalang or being punched repeatedly in the face before someone pity-friends you. But as someone who grew up VERY awkwardly socialised, even meeting people the normal human way is a bit difficult. It's easy to add someone on Facebook, but isn't it better if you know this person thought about you at least a few times a week? If they kept you in mind? That seems to me just as hard to achieve, sometimes, as battling monsters.

A funny thing happened on the way back from the shops...

I have been wanting to read Alan Bennett's The Uncommon Reader for a few years, and I had forgotten it until I saw it in a pile sitting on someone's garden wall. There were maybe twenty others including two Twilight books, a Stieg Larsson and a Nicholas Sparks. They had been set out for anyone passing to take. I carried off Mark Haddon's A Spot of Bother, Nick Hornby's Slam, Nora Ephron's Heartburn, Margaret Atwood's Wilderness Tips, and Ali Smith's The Accidental, aside from this book.

I've been a little down because of failed job apps lately, but this is a great reminder of why I love London and decided to move here. I know 'free books that don't suck' is a petty reason and might have better served an Oxfam or the Mind store down the way, but I got them and they do mean a lot to me now. So I will be reading these and posting reviews.

OOPS I FORGOT--I saw Richard II. Not in person, I mean the Hollow Crown series was showing on HBO and [personal profile] cobweb_diamond had done a great post on her fashion blog about it. So I saw it. I couldn't quite believe it.

(Thoughts, tweets, sketches--because I had to get down as much of the crack as I could.)
